About Me

Hi, my name is Varun and I'm a Software development manager with 5+ years of experience in managing development using Agile and SDLC methodologies. Previously, I had been a Project Manager with 5+ years of experience in end-to-end construction of renewable energy projects embedded with self-built proprietary IoT platform for asset management.

From a young age in Tenerife, Canary Islands; I saw, during a school trip to ITER, the potential that Renewable Energy has to change the way we produce and consume energy without emitting carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. For this reason and since completing my MSc, I started working at Life Long Energy where we identified and developed Solar and Wind Energy projects. As a medium sized business, I got the opportunity to extensively develop my duties, where I:

  • Identified potential sites and interacted with customers who had good solar and/or wind resources
  • Performed initial desktop and following site feasibility surveys
  • Produced bankable AEP assessments
  • Produced Planning and Environmental statements and reports
  • Submitted DNO Applications
  • Consulted with local councils, members of the public and other relevant statutory consultees
  • Established a relationship with solar and wind turbine manufacturers
  • Oversee projects throughout design, installation and commissioning

Once I had developed an understanding of the UK's renewable market, I sought to find an opportunity that would take my skills to the next level. This is when I found a post at De Montfort University in Research to be part of an EPSRC funded project to provide monitoring and control in renewable energy powered mini and micro-grids in rural areas across Africa and Asia. My main role has been to design, build and test a suite of hardware and software solutions that can monitor and control, through demand response techniques, i.e. smart switching, the grids and their customers.

Through the development of the technology, I have understood how hardware and software lifecycles are developed and how to tackle design and integration challenges, which allowed me to move to Singapore, where I'm able to follow my passion and continue growing in the technology sector.

My career has taken me to technical, commercial and research areas in different disciplines, but I have passively gained an exposure to economics and finance. I have been managing a portfolio of stocks, research and advice on investments to private investors, and recently started developing algorithms that can forecast sentiment in any worldwide market on an hourly/daily basis, and thus, develop a quantitative trading system that automates my portfolio.

EDF (Singapore) – Software Engineering Manager (02/08/2018 - 11/06/2021)

Lead and manage the full-stack development of the EDF City Platform, which is a 3D complex system modelling platform that enables urban planners, architects and engineers evaluate the impacts of building city scale projects at the master-planning stage, by running and forecasting policies and investment scenarios based on advanced integrated simulation models, within an energy resources, urban environment and mobility context.

Furthermore, I am always looking for opportunities to grow our R&D projects portfolio and have applied for projects in transactive energy microgrids in an urban context, developing an asset monitoring IoT platform reinforced with predictive maintenance algorithms, and demand side management applications for energy and power limited systems.

National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) – Research Associate (20/07/2017 - 31/07/2018)

Development of EdTech and Learning Analytics technology, which integrated into the classroom to enhance student team collaboration and teacher pedagogical practice in collaborative inquiry programs. My responsibilities were to develop, customize and refine a web-based application, including chat applications, data mining, personalized analytics dashboards; and apply machine learning techniques to create a personalised adaptive learning system that improve student’s cognitive abilities.

De Montfort University (UK) – Research Associate (06/01/2014 - 31/01/2017)

The ESCoBox project proposed to develop and test a technology platform for remote monitoring, billing and control of micro-grids powered by renewable energy in developing world applications. I had been conducting research on control theory, ABM and Demand Side Response, and designed, built and tested a suite of hardware and software solutions that can monitor and control the micro-grids and their customers, which we adapted and tested in remote communities across Malawi, Kenya, Gambia and Nepal.

Life Long Energy (UK) – Project Engineer/Manager (1/07/2012 – 31/05/2016)

My role at Life Long Energy was to identify sites, design and project manage systems in Solar PV and Wind Energy up to 2MW. My involvement in optimising clients’ sites began at the initial stages with energy feasibility assessments and carrying planning applications continuing throughout the development, procurement and construction phases of the projects, including the settlement of financial structures that suit our clients’ needs and technical due diligence.

Linkatel Canarias S.L. (Spain) – Technical Consultant (01/09/2009 - 30/06/2010)

This experience served me to work as a consultant in a Vodafone partner. My responsibilities were to manage new and current clients (SOHO and SME) assessing them in the services of Vodafone OneNet and Linkatel's software solutions, from managing inbound calls to visiting customers and progressing the project through to the final infrastructure installation. I developed applications for BlackBerry using Javascript, one of them called iDynamic. This led me to provide technical support for the software, hardware and communications equipment to the client as well as to Linkatel’s offices. I left to pursue my professional and personal objectives in the field of renewable energy.

Kitna, Bath (UK) – Development engineer (10/01/2008 - 31/12/2008)

I held a KTP position as a development engineer in embedded software programming for an energy saving project to produce efficient street lighting. I gained C programming experience for 8 and 16 bit microcontrollers, from writing to testing and design of PIC prototype breadboards. I also assisted the company in any technical support with IT equipment and provided support to clients.

Commercial NTH, Tenerife (Spain) – Various Roles

I have long been involved in my father’s business, which has helped me to develop my entrepreneurial flair.
